CMCC-SISC Webinar – “IPCC Special Report on impacts of global warming of 1.5°C: An overview of the main outcomes”
12.30 pm CET – 18 December 2018
Presenter: Marco Bindi – Full Professor at Department of Agri-food Production and Environmental Sciences – University of Florence
Moderator: Carlo Barbante – Director “Istituto per la Dinamica dei Processi Ambientali (IDPA)” – CNR – President “Italian Society for Climate Sciences (SISC)”
This IPCC Special Report was dealing with the impacts of global warming of 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways, in the context of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change, sustainable development, and efforts to eradicate poverty. The assessment was based on literature relevant to 1.5°C, especially since the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), consistent with the IPCC guidance on the use of literature. It has been undertaken by 86 experts from 39 countries, the 38% of the experts were women, the 51% came from developing countries and economies in transition and 26% were new to the IPCC process.
The SR1.5 was structured into 5 chapters: Chapter 1: Framing and context; Chapter 2: Mitigation pathways compatible with 1.5°C in the context of sustainable development; Chapter 3: Impacts of 1.5°C global warming on natural and human systems; Chapter 4: Strengthening and implementing the global response to the threat of climate change; Chapter 5: Sustainable development, poverty eradication and reducing inequalities.
In this presentation, the authors will provide an overview of the main key findings focusing on projected climatic changes, their potential impacts and associated risks, and the possible global response in the context of a sustainable development.
