2016 Elections

The 2016 election of the Italian Society for Climate Sciences took place during the SISC General Assembly on 20 October 2016 at 4:30 p.m. at the lecture hall of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, University of Cagliari, at the Fourth Annual Conference of the Italian Society for Climate Sciences.

SISC PRESIDENT ELECTIONS

Dr. Silvio Gualdi was entrusted with the mandate of the  President-Elect for the 2017-2018 period, the mandate for the President for the 2019-2020 period, as well as the mandate of the Outgoing President for 2021-2022.

I graduated in Physics at the University of Modena, Italy, and after a short research period in Solid State Physics, I’ve been awarded with a EU Fellowship “Human Capital and Mobility” at the Max-Planck Institut fuer Meteorologie in Hamburg, where I graduated with a PhD in Geophysics (University of Hamburg), with a thesis on the dynamics of the Tropical Intraseasonal Oscillation, under the guidance of Prof. Hans von Storch. In year 1996, I got a research scientist position at the Istituto per le Scienze dell’Atmosfera e dell’Oceano (ISAO) of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) in Bologna, where I started my activity in the coupled atmosphere-ocean modelling field. During this period I contributed to the development of the global coupled model SINTEX, which has been used in a number of climate variability studies, especially in the investigation of the dominant modes of variability of the tropical climate, such as ENSO, the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (e.g. Guilyardi et al. J. Climate 2003, Gualdi et al. Clim. Dyn., 2003; Behera et al. Clim. Dyn., 2005; Sperber et al. Clim. Dyn., 2005; Zhang et al. Clim. Dyn., 2006). In year 2000, I became Research Scientist at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), where I was responsible of the development of the INGV seasonal forecasting system – based on the SINTEX model – that contributed to the DEMETER forecasting system (Palmer et al. BAMS, 2004). Afterwards (2005-2009), I led the Climate Dynamics group at INGV, coordinating the coupled modelling activity and the (first) Italian contribution to the CMIP simulations (CMIP3), using the INGV coupled model SXG (e.g. Gualdi et al. J Climate, 2008; Bellucci et al. Clim. Dyn., 2008). Since year 2007, I’m also Senior Scientist at the Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC). From 2007 to 2011, I headed the “Climate Variability and Climate Change” group, leading the CMCC contribution to the CMIP5 decadal predictions and climate change projections, and coordinating the modelling activity in the framework of the CIRCE EU-Project, where a new set of high-resolution atmosphere-ocean coupled models able to resolve the small-scale features of the Mediterranean Sea have been developed, and a set of climate change projections for the Mediterranean region have been performed and analyzed (Gualdi et al. BAMS, 2013). Since July 2011, at CMCC, I’ve been Director of the Climate Service Division (2011-2014) and of the Climate Simulations and Predictions Division (2014–present), leading the activities of climate change projections and climate predictions (from seasonal to decadal time scales) performed at CMCC. I’m author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications (papers and book chapters). Since 2007, I’m a teacher of “Climate Dynamics and Predictions” for the “Science and Management of the Climate Change” Doctorate Programme of the Cà Foscari University of Venice, and I have been tutor and co-tutor of several PhD and Degree thesis at the University of Venice and University of Bologna.

ELECTION OF TWO ORDINARY MEMBERS OF SISC EXECUTIVE BOARD

Mita Lapi graduated in Physics from the University of Milan and since 1996 has been working at the Lombardy Foundation for the Environment (FLA) where she is the head of Air Quality and Climate Change Unit. In this sector, she is committed to promote and carry out, on the one hand, research and development programs, and on the other, information and training activities for the purposes of transferring knowledge to the public administration so that study results can be a useful tool to support decisions makers in legislation, administrative and strategic planning for institutional activities in the environmental field. In particular, she is responsible for the coordination of scientific and editorial projects carried out by the FLA in the context of mitigation and adaptation to climate change at the European, national and regional levels (she is the project coordinator of “Project Kyoto – Research on Climate Change and the control of greenhouse gas emissions in Lombardia” and of the “Regional Strategy for adaptation to climate change in Lombardy”). She is the delegate of the FLA for relations with the European Commission and other European institutions, and since 2000 has also been the contact point, designated by the FLA, with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and has been delegated to participate in the Conferences of Parties (COP) and Meetings of the Parties under the Kyoto Protocol. Engaged in university seminars and masters level II as expert and ‘key informant’, she is also the students business tutor at the University of Milan, University of Milan Bicocca, Milan Polytechnic and the University of the Sacred Heart who carry out internship projects at the FLA. She is also a member of the jury of scientific national awards dedicated to environmental sustainability and innovation.

stefano-caserini-siscStefano Caserini

Stefano has a Master degree in Environmental Engineering and PhD in Sanitary Engineering. He is contract professor of Mitigation of Climate Change at the Politecnico di Milano, where he is involved in researches on atmospheric pollution, life cycle assessment, municipal waste incinerator monitoring and greenhouse gas emission assessment and reduction.
He also works as a consultant for private and public company in the fields of emission inventory, environmental impact assessment, air quality pollution and mitigation of climate change. Author of many scientific publications, is also involved in the dissemination of scientific knowledge on climate change. Stefano has published four books and is founder and coordinator of Climalteranti.it, one of the main Italian blog on climate change, and Co-Director of the review “Ingegneria dell’Ambiente” (Engineering of the Environment).
