The 2014 election of the Italian Society for Climate Sciences took place during the SISC General Assembly on 30 September 2014 at 15:45 at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Ca’ Dolfin, at the Second Annual Conference of the Italian Society for Climate Sciences.
SISC PRESIDENT ELECTIONS
Prof. Carlo Barbante was entrusted with the mandate of the President-Elect for the 2015-2016 period, the mandate for the President for the 2017-2018 period, as well as the mandate of the Outgoing President for 2019-2020.
Carlo Barbante is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice andDirector of the Institute for the Dynamics of Environmental Processes of the National Research Council. He is a scientist with a very high international profile and in the last twenty years he has made substantial contributions to the environmental and climate sciences. His particular strength is the ability to span fields by contributing to ice core geochemistry, analytical chemistry, paleoclimate, environmental contamination, atmospheric chemistry, and synthesizing findings from across these diverse fields. He is (most) noted for his contributions to the fields of paleoclimatology and past biogeochemical cycles. Specifically, these contributions include the reconstruction of past atmospheric pollution through polar and alpine ice core analysis, as well as the development and use of novel analytical approaches based on inorganic/organic mass spectrometry. In all of these fields he has played a substantial role in the production and understanding of datasets that have revolutionized our knowledge of Earth system history. He won the “ERC Advanced Grant” of the European Commission with a project that deals with the reconstruction of the impact of human activities on climate. He actually is the Italian National Delegate to Horizon 2020 for the Societal Challenge “Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials” and (currently) Professor at “Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei”, Rome.
“It is now clear from the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC that emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate. This evidence is incontrovertible and if no mitigating and adaptation actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, security and human health and social systems are likely to occur. In this context the “Italian Society for Climate Sciences” (SISC) has to act as a catalyst of actions and an overarching forum of ideas among different disciplines. The work of physicists and chemists, geographers and geologists, economists and political scientists must be integrated toward the common objectives of supporting policies and actions that will reduce the effects of climate change. SISC has to represent the ideal platform for education of younger generations of scientists and a competent partner for national policy makers in supporting decisions on climate related issues.”

ELECTION OF TWO ORDINARY MEMBERS OF SISC EXECUTIVE BOARD
The two new Ordinary Members of the Executive Board for the period 2015-2018 are:
Francesco Bosello. Graduated at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, he received a Master degree in economics from the University College of London (UK) and a Doctoral degree in economics from the University of Venice. He is presently associate researcher at the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) of Milan, assistant professor of economics at the University Statale of Milan and affiliate scientist of the Italian “EuromediterraneanCenter for Climate Change” (CMCC). His main interests are focused on climate-change policy and modelling with particular emphasis on negotiation aspects of international environmental agreements and on optimal policy design considering adaptation and mitigation options. Currently his research activities concentrates in the area of climate change impact assessment and in the design of optimal mitigation and adaptation strategies developing integrated assessment modelling tools.

Antonello Pasini is a researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research of the CNR. He is a theoretical physicist in training and has specialized in meteorology according to the standards of the World Meteorological Organization. Since the 1990s, he has been an expert of complex systems and artificial intelligence and has applied these skills to the field with weather-climate modeling studies. He is the author of numerous scientific papers in international journals and has recently published a multi-author book for Springer that represents state-of-the-art artificial intelligence studies for environmental sciences. The most significant results obtained by Antonello are in the field of climatic attribution. In addition to research, for nearly a decade he has also been involved in publishing. On models and methods for climate studies he published I Cambiamenti Climatici. Meteorologia e clima simulato (Bruno Mondadori, 2003), with a revised edition in English for World Scientific Publishers (2005), titled From Observations to Simulations. A Conceptual Introduction to Weather and Climate Modelling. He also edited the multi-authored book Kyoto e Dintorni. I cambiamenti climatici come problema globale – Kyoto and surroundings. Climate Change as a Global Problem (Franco Angeli, 2006) where he presents to the public the latest results on the study of the climate and its impacts on the land and ecosystems, with particular attention on future changes in the Mediterranean and Italy. Along with Luca Fiorani, he then wrote Il Pianeta che scotta. Capire il dibattito sui cambiamenti climatici – The Hot Planet.Understanding the Climate Change Debate (2010), which is dedicated to the analysis of the media debate on climate. He is the author of a blog on climate change with the symbolic title Il Kyoto fisso, which has been on the web pages of Il Sole 24 Ore for 5 years and today is hosted by the Le Scienze website (Italian edition ofScientific American).
